Kashmir Valley awoke to a picturesque transformation on Saturday as fresh snowfall dusted its plains and higher reaches, while light to moderate rains soaked other areas. The unexpected March snow brought a wintry charm to districts like Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian, and Pulwama, where plains rarely see such cover this late in the season. Popular tourist destinations—Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam—also reported steady snowfall, delighting visitors and locals alike.
In northern Kashmir, Gurez in Bandipora, parts of Kupwara, and elevated regions saw snow accumulation that persisted into the late morning, according to officials. Meanwhile, Srinagar and surrounding areas experienced intermittent rain, adding to the region’s moody weather shift. The Meteorological Department attributed the conditions to a western disturbance, forecasting light to moderate rain across most of Kashmir through Saturday, with snow confined to higher altitudes.
“There could be brief spells of light rain or snow at several places into Sunday morning,” the Met office noted, predicting clearer skies by afternoon. The snowfall, though unseasonal for the plains, aligns with Kashmir’s erratic spring weather patterns, often influenced by lingering winter systems.
The fresh snow has sparked excitement among tourism operators in Gulmarg and Pahalgam, hoping to extend the ski and sightseeing season. However, authorities are monitoring road conditions in higher reaches like Gurez, where snow clearance may be needed.
