A tragic incident unfolded at a hydro power plant near Lunawada town in Gujarat’s Mahisagar district on Thursday, September 4, 2025, when water from the Mahi river surged into the facility, leaving five workers feared drowned. The disaster occurred around 3 pm when 15 workers were conducting maintenance inside a large well at the Dolatpura plant, according to District Superintendent of Police (SP) Safin Hasan.
The sudden influx of water, triggered by a discharge from the upstream Kadana dam, inundated the well, trapping the workers. While 10 managed to escape, five remain unaccounted for despite a 24-hour multi-agency rescue operation. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and fire brigades from Vadodara and Mahisagar have been deployed, battling challenging conditions including deep water, zero visibility, and the presence of oil and grease.
SP Hasan noted that an underwater search vehicle from Vadodara has been summoned to aid the effort. As the search continues with no trace of the missing workers, the incident highlights the dangers of maintenance work in flood-prone areas and the urgent need for enhanced safety measures at such facilities.
