A major fire broke out on Thursday morning in a commercial complex located near the historic Hyderabad area close to the iconic Charminar. The incident occurred at the SYJ Commercial Complex in Pathergatti near Madina Crossroads, one of the city’s busiest and most densely packed trading zones. Authorities confirmed that while the fire caused extensive property damage, no casualties were reported. The blaze was brought under control after several hours of coordinated firefighting operations.

According to initial reports, the fire originated in a garment shop situated on the first floor of the building during the early hours of the day. The flames quickly spread to adjoining shops, fueled by stored textiles and closely packed commercial units. As the complex houses multiple retail outlets, banks, and diagnostic centres, the situation initially caused panic among traders and early arrivals in the vicinity. The rapid spread of smoke and flames made visibility difficult in the narrow commercial corridors.

Fire and emergency services responded promptly, deploying eight fire engines drawn from five different fire stations across the city. Firefighters worked continuously for nearly two hours to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to lower floors and adjacent structures. Water tankers and additional support teams were also mobilised to ensure a steady supply of resources during the operation. Their coordinated effort helped restrict the fire to a limited section of the building despite its intensity.

Senior officials from the police and fire department, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police of the Charminar Zone, Kiran Khare, supervised the firefighting efforts on site. Their presence ensured quick coordination between emergency units and helped streamline evacuation and containment measures. Authorities also worked to secure the surrounding area to prevent further risk to pedestrians and nearby shops in the densely populated market stretch.

Officials stated that three shops were completely gutted in the incident, while several others sustained partial damage due to heat and smoke. Fortunately, the fire broke out before business hours, which significantly reduced the risk of human casualties. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown at this stage, and a detailed investigation has been launched by the police and fire department to determine whether it was triggered by an electrical fault or another factor.

The incident has once again highlighted fire safety concerns in Hyderabad’s older commercial zones, particularly around heritage-rich and high-density markets near Charminar. It comes in the backdrop of previous fire tragedies in the same region, including a major incident last year that resulted in multiple fatalities. Authorities are expected to review safety compliance in similar commercial complexes following Thursday’s blaze to prevent future occurrences.
