To address the anticipated surge in passengers during the Diwali and Chhath Puja festivals, Indian Railways has suspended platform ticket sales at 15 key stations across its Northern, Western, and Central Railway zones, effective from October 15, 2025. The measure, aimed at preventing overcrowding and ensuring passenger safety, responds to the expected high footfall during the festive season, with specific timelines and exemptions varying by region.
Northern Railway has halted ticket sales from October 15 to 28 at New Delhi, Old Delhi, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Anand Vihar, and Ghaziabad. Chief Public Relations Officer Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay emphasized that the decision prioritizes smooth passenger movement, with provisions for those assisting senior citizens, Divyangjan (persons with disabilities), women, or illiterate passengers to obtain tickets at enquiry offices. Western Railway’s ban, extending until October 31, covers Bandra Terminus in Mumbai and Gujarat stations Vapi, Udhna, and Surat, as confirmed by Chief Public Relations Officer Vineet Abhishek.
Central Railway has similarly restricted ticket sales at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Dadar, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), Thane, Kalyan, and Panvel in the Mumbai division. To mitigate risks seen in past incidents, such as injuries during a boarding rush at Bandra Terminus last year, Central Railway has introduced holding areas at space-constrained stations like LTT. A senior official noted that these measures enhance safety amid the festive rush.

Exemptions are permitted for those accompanying vulnerable passengers, including senior citizens, women, Divyangjan, or those requiring special care, ensuring access to platforms for genuine needs. Travelers are encouraged to book tickets online and stay updated on station-specific guidelines to navigate the festive period seamlessly.
