The government of Uttar Pradesh has renamed the Fazil Nagar Assembly constituency in Kushinagar district as Pawagarh, with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announcing the decision during a public event on Tuesday. The move is part of a broader cultural and administrative initiative aimed at reflecting historical and religious heritage in place names.
According to the announcement, the new name—Pawagarh—is dedicated to Jain Tirthankar Lord Mahavir. The state government said the change was made following a proposal from the Kushinagar district administration, which was later approved by the Chief Minister’s Office.
Officials stated that the name “Pawagarh” is derived from Pawapuri in Bihar, a significant Jain pilgrimage site associated with Lord Mahavir. The renaming is intended to strengthen cultural identity and promote religious tourism in the region, which already holds importance in Buddhist and Jain traditions.

Speaking at a government event in the constituency, CM Yogi Adityanath said the renaming would give the area a renewed identity rooted in India’s spiritual heritage. He added that the region would now be associated with Lord Mahavir and expressed confidence that it would attract pilgrims and visitors from across the country.
The constituency has also been politically significant, previously associated with senior leader Swami Prasad Maurya, who contested from the seat in past elections. The announcement comes amid intensified political activity in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the upcoming state Assembly elections scheduled for next year. The government’s decision is expected to go through formal administrative procedures before being fully implemented across official records, maps, and government documentation.
