As the 2026 Formula One season prepares to get underway at the Australian Grand Prix in Albert Park this Sunday, experts and former drivers have shared their predictions for what promises to be a landmark year in the sport, following major regulation changes. Several analysts and ex-drivers have tipped George Russell as the early favourite for the Drivers’ Championship, while others highlight potential challenges from Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, and Oscar Piastri.
Sky Sports commentator and former F1 driver Martin Brundle declined to name a single favourite but expressed confidence in Russell’s ability to win races this season, pointing to Mercedes’ competitive package. He also noted strong performances from Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull. For the Australian Grand Prix podium, Brundle predicts Charles Leclerc, George Russell, and Oscar Piastri to finish in the top three.
Anthony Davidson, Sky Sports analyst and former test driver, is more decisive in his prediction, calling George Russell the clear favourite for the 2026 Drivers’ Championship. He believes the Mercedes driver is starting the season on strong footing with a car capable of consistent top finishes. For Melbourne, Davidson predicts Russell, Max Verstappen, and Lando Norris will occupy the podium.

Former F1 driver Karun Chandhok also supports Russell as the favourite, emphasizing that success depends on Mercedes delivering the best car on the grid. Chandhok sees Russell as the second-best driver after Verstappen and predicts the podium for the Australian Grand Prix will include Russell, Oscar Piastri, and Lando Norris. Similarly, Sky Sports lead commentator David Croft believes Russell is the favourite but notes that Piastri, Norris, and Verstappen remain close contenders, forecasting the same trio for the upcoming race.
2009 World Champion Jenson Button expects Russell to claim the title but also highlights the potential challenge from McLaren’s Norris as the season progresses. Button also anticipates that Lewis Hamilton could return to top form under the new regulations, adding more competition to the championship.
Italian F1 legend Riccardo Patrese offered a differing view, predicting Max Verstappen may ultimately win the championship due to his adaptability and instinctive approach to the new rules. As teams and drivers prepare for the opening race in Melbourne, the consensus among experts suggests a competitive season with multiple title contenders and an exciting start to the 2026 Formula One calendar.
