Former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has vacated his official residence at the Vice-President’s Enclave and temporarily moved to a private farmhouse in Chhatarpur, South Delhi, owned by Indian National Lok Dal leader Abhay Chautala. The interim arrangement follows Dhankhar’s resignation on July 21, 2025, citing health reasons, more than a month before his term was set to end in August 2027. He is awaiting the allocation of a type-8 government bungalow at 34 APJ Abdul Kalam Road, which requires three months for repairs and decoration, as per the Central Public Works Department (CPWD).
Dhankhar, 74, has formally requested the Urban Development Ministry for a bungalow in the Lutyens’ Zone, as entitled to former vice presidents under government rules, which also allow for 2 acres of land at an ancestral place. His political career spans roles as a Congress MLA from Rajasthan’s Kishangarh (1993-1998), Lok Sabha MP from Jhunjhunu (1989-1991), and Governor of West Bengal.
Dhankhar is eligible for three pensions: ₹42,000 monthly as a former MLA (with a 20% hike for his age), ₹45,000 as a former MP, and an undisclosed amount as a former vice president, alongside ₹25,000 monthly reimbursement for secretarial staff as a former governor.
The farmhouse stay marks a transitional phase as the nation prepares for a vice-presidential election on September 9, pitting NDA candidate CP Radhakrishnan against opposition nominee B Sudershan Reddy. Dhankhar’s move underscores the logistical challenges faced by high-ranking officials post-tenure, with the government working to expedite the bungalow’s readiness to accommodate the former vice president’s entitlements.
