Former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) O P Rawat has staunchly defended the Election Commission of India, calling it “impartial” and praising its efforts to address public concerns through a recent press conference. Speaking in Indore, Rawat welcomed the commission’s move to clarify doubts surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, amid allegations raised by opposition leaders.
The controversy stems from claims by Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, who accused the commission of “vote theft” during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Several opposition figures also questioned the SIR process in Bihar. In response, current CEC Gyanesh Kumar held a press conference on Sunday, challenging Gandhi to either substantiate his allegations with a signed affidavit or issue an apology, as mandated by electoral regulations. Rawat, while declining to comment directly on Gandhi’s claims, noted he had not reviewed the commission’s full response but emphasized its commitment to transparency.
“The Election Commission’s press conference is a commendable step to clear public doubts about the SIR process and other concerns,” Rawat told PTI. He further addressed demands for public access to final electoral rolls, stating that their prior publication makes such requests reasonable. “Enrolling in the electoral roll strengthens democracy, and privacy concerns only arise when voter details are misused,” he clarified.

Rawat also dismissed allegations of bogus voting, asserting that strict verification processes, including document checks and the use of indelible ink, make multiple voting by an individual “negligible.” His remarks underscore confidence in the commission’s mechanisms to ensure fair elections, reinforcing its role as a pillar of India’s democratic framework amid ongoing debates.
