A 24-year-old woman was killed in a road accident late Wednesday evening after allegedly being run over by a car driven by a police officer who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol. The incident occurred near the Kali Paltan Bridge in Ambala and sparked protests outside the Ambala Civil Hospital, where the victim’s family demanded strict action against the accused.
The victim, identified as Nikita, was travelling from Delhi to her home in Ambala in an e-rickshaw when the accident took place. According to eyewitnesses, the speeding car rammed into the e-rickshaw, causing Nikita to fall onto the road. She was then allegedly run over by the same vehicle and died on the spot. She was later taken to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Ravinder Singh, the e-rickshaw driver, said he was carrying four passengers when the collision occurred. “I was driving from Ambala Cantt when a speeding car driven by a police officer hit our e-rickshaw. One of the passengers, a woman, fell down. After that, the officer ran over her,” he claimed. He further alleged that the driver appeared to be intoxicated at the time of the incident.

Nikita’s brother, Mayank, echoed similar allegations, citing accounts from local residents. He said his sister worked in Gurugram and was returning home when the accident happened. “A drunk police officer was driving the car, which ran over my sister,” he said, demanding strict punishment.
Following the incident, local residents apprehended the driver and handed him over to the police. Station House Officer (SHO) Dharamveer confirmed that the accused, identified as Police Sub-Inspector Amit, was posted at the Baldev Nagar outpost. “The policeman lost control of the vehicle and ran over Nikita, and the vehicle later hit the highway grille. The driver has been arrested, and a case has been registered,” he said.
Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, including allegations of drunken driving. Authorities have assured that appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings of the probe.
