Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s unexpected resignation on July 21, 2025, has stirred intense political debate, with sources revealing a dramatic chain of events leading to his departure as Rajya Sabha Chairman. Officially attributed to health reasons, Dhankhar’s exit followed a clash with the government over an Opposition-backed motion to impeach Justice Yashwant Varma, entangled in a cash recovery controversy, which the Centre opposed.
The day began with Dhankhar chairing the Rajya Sabha’s Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting, where he questioned ministers about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s schedule for addressing Operation Sindoor, frustrating government representatives.
After a lunch break, during which he declined calls from a senior minister, Dhankhar returned at 4 PM to raise the Opposition’s impeachment notice in the Rajya Sabha, defying the Centre’s plan for a unified anti-corruption stance against Varma. Although the motion was not admitted, tensions escalated.
By 4:30 PM, no government representatives attended a rescheduled BAC meeting, signaling a deepening rift. Meanwhile, NDA MPs gathered in Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s office, securing 134 signatures for a proposal to remove Dhankhar.
At 4:50 PM, just 10 minutes before the parliamentary day’s deadline, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal delivered a sealed envelope to the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, reportedly formalizing the move against Dhankhar. While its contents remain undisclosed, sources confirm it targeted his removal.

Dhankhar resigned that evening, citing health concerns, but the NDA’s swift action suggests underlying political motives. Opposition leaders, including Congress’s Jairam Ramesh, praised Dhankhar’s impartiality while hinting at “far deeper reasons” for his exit, pointing to strains with the ruling alliance.
The episode has sparked widespread discussion, leaving India’s parliamentary democracy at a pivotal moment as the Election Commission prepares to address the vacant Vice President’s position.
