Following the tragic collapse of a four-storey building in northeast Delhi’s Welcome area that killed seven people, including women and children, on Sunday, Delhi Police are set to request a detailed list of structurally unsafe buildings from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). The initiative aims to enhance resident safety, especially during the monsoon season when water seepage heightens the risk of collapses in older or unauthorized structures.
A senior police officer revealed that coordination with the MCD has begun to secure real-time data on buildings deemed unfit for habitation. “This list will enable district-level police teams to monitor vulnerable structures and respond swiftly to emergencies,” the officer stated. The police will formally request the MCD to provide a comprehensive inventory of dilapidated buildings, which the civic body identifies through routine structural stability inspections.
The officer noted that many unsafe buildings remain occupied due to a lack of alternative housing or owner negligence, exacerbating risks during heavy rains. To bolster safety, police beat staff will survey areas for visibly damaged structures and collaborate with disaster response teams and the MCD if threats are detected. Public cooperation is also vital, with authorities urging residents to report sagging or compromised buildings.
