Delhi Police has dismissed allegations by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that a Bengali-speaking woman and her child were assaulted by police in the capital for speaking their language, labeling the viral video she shared on X as “fabricated” and “politically motivated.” The rebuttal follows a swift investigation that uncovered inconsistencies and an alleged political plot to tarnish the police’s reputation.
On July 28, Banerjee posted the video on X, claiming Delhi Police personnel brutally assaulted Sanjanu Parveen and her child. Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Abhishek Dhania clarified that Parveen alleged four men posing as police officers took her and her child to a secluded spot on July 26, demanding ₹25,000, which she claimed to have paid. However, a probe involving CCTV footage, local intelligence, and sustained questioning revealed a different story.
Parveen admitted that a relative, a political worker from Malda, West Bengal, instructed her to create the video, which was first circulated locally before gaining traction online. “The video is baseless and fabricated, designed to defame Delhi Police,” Dhania stated, emphasizing that the narrative appeared to be a deliberate attempt to push a political agenda. The investigation continues to explore the motives and individuals behind the video’s creation.

This incident adds to ongoing tensions between Banerjee and central authorities. In 2023, similar claims of targeted harassment against Bengali migrants surfaced, which Delhi Police also refuted, citing lack of evidence. The controversy underscores the growing use of social media to amplify unverified allegations, prompting calls for stricter regulations on digital misinformation.
