All 70 Delhi Legislative Assembly members, including Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and opposition leaders, received iPhone 16 Pro smartphones, iPads, and tablets on Monday to support the rollout of the National e-Vidhan Application (NeVA). The initiative, part of the Centre’s “One Nation, One Application” program, aims to make the assembly paperless.
The distribution, which sparked buzz on the Monsoon Session’s first day, saw legislators equipped with devices to navigate NeVA’s digital interface, featuring smart delegate units, multilingual support, real-time document access, and secure networking with HD cameras.
Last month, MLAs underwent training to master the system, which includes RFID/NFC access and automated AV systems. The move, however, stirred controversy after the Delhi government raised the mobile phone purchase ceiling to ₹1.5 lakh for the Chief Minister and ₹1.25 lakh for ministers, up from ₹50,000, prompting a heated exchange between the BJP and Aam Aadmi Party over the costly devices.
In a parallel milestone, the Delhi Assembly became India’s first to operate entirely on solar power, following the inauguration of a 500-kilowatt rooftop plant on Sunday. Chief Minister Gupta hailed the plant as a landmark in environmental accountability, while Union Minister Meghwal noted Delhi’s full implementation of three new criminal laws, marking a transformative moment for the assembly’s technological and sustainable advancements.
