Delhi Environment, Forest and Wildlife Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa and Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha led a plantation drive at the PBG Ground in the Delhi Ridge, with senior police officials participating in the environmental campaign. The initiative is part of the Delhi government’s large-scale tree plantation programme aimed at expanding green cover and improving the city’s ecological balance.
Sirsa said the plantation campaign has been inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative, which combines environmental protection with a tribute to mothers. He said Delhi is witnessing one of its biggest plantation efforts, with a target of planting 70 lakh trees and saplings across the national capital during the year.
As part of an eco-restoration programme inspired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, around 15 lakh trees and saplings are being planted in the Delhi Ridge and other identified green areas. Sirsa said the focus is not only on increasing the number of trees but also on ensuring their long-term survival through scientific monitoring and maintenance.

The minister stated that every sapling planted under the campaign will be geo-tagged to track its growth and survival. He added that the Delhi government has prepared a 10-year plantation strategy focused on increasing green cover through native tree species that provide better shade, require less water, generate oxygen and help reduce pollution levels.
Sirsa also highlighted the importance of nature conservation in Indian traditions, referring to the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and the message of respecting air, water and earth. He said planting a tree is not merely an environmental activity but an investment in the future health and security of the city and its residents.
The plantation campaign has received participation from various sections of society, including members of the judiciary, diplomats from more than 70 countries, educational institutions, religious organisations and citizen groups. The Delhi government has also linked the green drive with its broader environmental restoration efforts, including plans to address the city’s long-standing garbage dump sites and improve overall urban sustainability.
