Delhi residents will finally be able to soar above the city’s skyline as the Delhi Development Authority launches the capital’s first-ever hot air balloon rides on Saturday at 4:30 pm from Asita on the Yamuna riverfront. The brightly coloured tethered balloons, securely anchored by four heavy-duty ropes, will offer panoramic aerial views of the floodplain, river and surrounding greenery, marking a landmark addition to the city’s recreational offerings.
Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena personally inspected the successful trial run at Baansera Park near Sarai Kale Khan and gave the project a green signal, confirming that safety protocols are robust. Each balloon is held by ropes capable of bearing seven tonnes, with mandatory pre-flight checks including burner inspection, crew breathalyser tests and real-time weather monitoring. Flights will be immediately suspended if wind conditions become unfavourable.
The rides are priced at ₹3,000 plus taxes per person for a 7–12-minute tethered experience accommodating four passengers at a time. Operations will run daily for four hours, weather permitting, with November to February chosen for stable winter air ideal for ballooning. After Asita, services will expand to Baansera Park, Yamuna Sports Complex and Commonwealth Games Village Sports Complex.

The initiative forms part of the broader Yamuna Riverfront Activation project aimed at transforming neglected floodplain areas into vibrant leisure zones. Authorities expect the aerial attraction to significantly boost tourism by providing residents and visitors a unique perspective of the capital, complementing traditional heritage sites with modern outdoor adventure.
The launch drew sharp political reactions, with Congress general secretary KC Venugopal criticising the timing, stating that while “BJP leaders enjoy hot air balloon rides to escape Delhi’s toxic air, the most vulnerable continue to choke”. Despite the controversy, the DDA remains focused on positioning the rides as a safe, family-friendly attraction that showcases the city’s evolving recreational landscape.
