Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta planted a sapling at Silver Oak Park in Jangpura on Wednesday to commemorate the sixth death anniversary of former External Affairs Minister and Delhi’s first woman Chief Minister, Sushma Swaraj, who passed away on August 6, 2019. The ceremony was attended by Swaraj’s daughter, Bansuri Swaraj, the New Delhi MP.
Gupta praised Swaraj’s legacy, recalling her personal guidance when Gupta became a Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) councillor in 2017. “Sushma Didi was filled with motherly love and guided me in my early days,” Gupta said. She highlighted Swaraj’s tenure as Delhi CM in 1998, noting her focus on resolving public issues with dedication. “Her work style inspires the BJP government in Delhi to prioritize public welfare,” Gupta added. As External Affairs Minister (2014–2019), Swaraj transformed citizen engagement with the ministry, making it more accessible through innovative diplomacy.
Swaraj, a seven-time MP and three-time MLA, led the BJP to a 52-seat victory in the 2015 Delhi Assembly elections and championed causes like the 2016 triple talaq bill. Gupta emphasized that Swaraj’s contributions to Indian politics and society remain unforgettable, cementing her legacy as a trailblazer for women’s empowerment.
