The Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration issued an urgent port warning on Sunday as a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal threatens to intensify, bringing heavy rainfall and rough seas through Monday. A ‘Local Cautionary Signal-3’ has been raised across the archipelago, urging tourists and locals to steer clear of the sea to ensure safety.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) accompanied by thunderstorms, gusty winds (30-40 kmph), and lightning across South Andaman, North and Middle Andaman, and Nicobar districts. “The sea is expected to be rough to very rough, posing risks to vessels and commuters,” an IMD official warned. The administration has prohibited fishermen, ships, small boats, and trawlers from venturing into the sea until Monday as a precautionary measure.
“We are fully equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and quick-response teams to handle emergencies on land and water,” said a senior official from the Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS). Public advisories have been issued, with tourists specifically asked to avoid coastal areas and plan travel accordingly to prevent disruptions. The DSS emphasized that passenger and vessel safety remains the top priority, with measures in place to mitigate risks during the adverse weather.

The cyclonic circulation, currently centered over the central Bay of Bengal, is expected to intensify into a low-pressure area, potentially escalating into a depression. Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation, coordinating with the Indian Coast Guard and Navy for emergency preparedness. Residents have been advised to stay indoors during heavy rain spells and avoid low-lying areas prone to flooding.
The warning comes during the peak tourist season, prompting the administration to ramp up communication efforts through local media and social platforms. Hotels and tour operators have been instructed to inform visitors about the advisory, ensuring minimal disruption to the islands’ tourism-driven economy while prioritizing safety.
