Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Suresh Kalmadi breathed his last in Pune early Tuesday morning after battling a prolonged illness, family sources confirmed. The 81-year-old political veteran, known for his influential roles in both governance and sports administration, passed away around 3:30 am at a private hospital where he had been undergoing treatment.
Kalmadi, who served as Union Minister of State for Railways, left an indelible mark on Indian politics as a long-time representative of Pune in the Lok Sabha, securing multiple terms and holding several pivotal positions. Beyond politics, he was a prominent figure in national sports, having led the Indian Olympic Association as its president for years, contributing significantly to the country's sporting landscape.
Leaders from across the political spectrum have expressed profound grief over his demise, paying rich tributes to his dedicated service in public life and acknowledging his multifaceted contributions to society. His passing has evoked widespread condolences, reflecting the broad respect he commanded despite the controversies that marked parts of his career.

Kalmadi is survived by his wife, a son and daughter-in-law, two married daughters and their husbands, along with several grandchildren who mourn the loss of a family patriarch. His mortal remains will be kept at his residence, Kalmadi House in Pune's Erandwane area, until 2 pm for public homage.
The final rites are scheduled to take place at the Vaikunth crematorium in Navi Peth at 3:30 pm on Tuesday, allowing admirers and well-wishers to bid a final farewell to the departed leader whose legacy in politics and sports will endure.
