Winter has firmly set in across northern India, with snowfall in hilly regions signaling the arrival of the cold season. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a widespread cold wave affecting multiple states, accompanied by below-normal temperatures and dense fog in many areas. Residents have been advised to exercise caution and limit outdoor activities, particularly in the early morning.
In Delhi, temperatures are expected to hover between 10°C and 24°C over the coming days, with overcast skies and persistent fog creating chilly conditions. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for the capital, warning residents to dress warmly and avoid prolonged exposure to the cold. Dense fog has already made early-morning commuting challenging, impacting road and rail traffic.
Hilly states such as Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh are also facing severe cold wave conditions. In Uttarakhand, temperatures are expected to range between 6°C and 18°C, while Himachal Pradesh may experience light rainfall and snowfall due to the activation of a western disturbance. The IMD has issued yellow alerts for both states, highlighting the potential impact on daily life and travel. Several locations in Himachal Pradesh are already recording minimum temperatures below 5°C.

In Uttar Pradesh, snowfall in the mountainous regions has intensified the cold wave, prompting the IMD to issue an orange alert for multiple districts. Citizens have been urged to follow local weather advisories, take necessary health precautions, and be mindful of vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions.
Beyond these states, the cold wave is affecting a broad swath of North India, including Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, and Chhattisgarh. Icy winds blowing from the Himalayas are leading to chilly mornings and sharp nighttime temperature drops. Dense fog has further reduced visibility, causing disruptions to road and rail transport, emphasizing the need for heightened awareness and precautionary measures.
