Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) delivered Mahe, the first of eight cutting-edge Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts (ASW SWC), to the Indian Navy on Thursday. The milestone event, marked by the signing of the acceptance form by Commanding Officer (Designate) Commander Amit Chandra Choubey and CSL Director (Operations) S Harikrishnan, took place in the presence of distinguished officials, including Western Naval Command Chief Staff Officer Rear Admiral R Adhisrinivasan and Warship Production Superintendent Commodore Anup Menon.
The 78-meter-long Mahe stands out as the largest Indian Navy warship powered by a Diesel Engine-Waterjet propulsion system, a testament to CSL’s engineering prowess. Designed and built in accordance with the stringent classification rules of Det Norske Veritas (DNV), this state-of-the-art vessel is equipped for a range of critical operations. Its primary roles include underwater surveillance, search and rescue missions, and low-intensity maritime operations (LIMO). Additionally, Mahe boasts advanced anti-submarine warfare capabilities tailored for coastal waters and sophisticated mine-laying features, enhancing the Navy’s strategic flexibility.
The delivery of Mahe underscores CSL’s pivotal role in strengthening India’s maritime defense infrastructure. “This warship represents a leap forward in our indigenous shipbuilding capabilities, designed to meet the Navy’s evolving operational needs,” a CSL spokesperson noted. The ship’s advanced technology and versatility make it a vital asset for safeguarding India’s coastal waters against submarine threats and other maritime challenges.
