Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday reaffirmed his government’s commitment to continue its crackdown on illegal infiltration in the state, a day after the BJP-led NDA secured its third consecutive electoral victory in Assam with an increased mandate. The Chief Minister said the renewed public support would further strengthen the government’s ongoing policies on identity, security, and development.
Speaking to reporters, Sarma said the fight against illegal infiltration would continue with “the same vigour,” stressing that protecting Assam’s identity remains a core priority of his administration. He thanked voters for placing their trust in Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP-led alliance, adding that the state is expected to see accelerated development in the coming years following the decisive mandate.
The BJP-led alliance registered a strong performance in the Assembly elections, winning 82 seats, while the Congress secured only 19 seats, reflecting a significant political gap between the two parties. The result has further consolidated the ruling alliance’s position in the state, while weakening the opposition’s influence in the Assembly.

Sarma also said that he had anticipated the party’s strong electoral performance, claiming that he had made an internal assessment immediately after polling concluded on April 9. He said the outcome reflects public confidence in the government’s governance model and development agenda, and added that the administration will now focus on delivering infrastructure growth, welfare schemes, and improved governance.
Beyond Assam, the Chief Minister also commented on the BJP’s performance in West Bengal, describing it as a “victory for the entire nation.” He stated that the outcome would contribute to strengthening security and political stability in eastern and northeastern India. His remarks were seen as reinforcing the BJP’s broader national narrative following the recent electoral gains.
Separately, Sarma responded to the legal development involving Congress leader Pawan Khera, who was granted bail in a forgery and defamation case linked to allegations against Sarma’s wife. He said the case remains ongoing despite the bail order. The Chief Minister also dismissed speculation of opposition MLAs joining the BJP, adding that the party already has a strong majority in the state Assembly and does not require additional members.
