The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2025 is set to honor the 100th birth anniversary of iconic filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak with a breathtaking retrospective that will captivate audiences from August 14 to 24. Revered as one of India’s greatest cinematic visionaries, Ghatak’s profound legacy will be celebrated through screenings of his masterpieces, thought-provoking academic panels, and curated discussions aimed at spotlighting his global influence.
Ghatak’s films, known for their poignant exploration of the Partition of India’s social and psychological toll, include the iconic "Partition Trilogy"—Meghe Dhaka Tara (1960), Komal Gandhar (1961), and Subarnarekha (1965)—alongside classics like Jukti Takko Aar Gappo (1974) and Titash Ekti Nadir Naam (1973). His work masterfully weaves themes of trauma, displacement, and identity with poetic intensity.
IFFM festival director Mitu Bhowmik Lange praised Ghatak as a trailblazer “far ahead of his time,” stating, “His cinema’s depth and urgency resonate powerfully today. We’re thrilled to bring global attention to Ghatak’s transformative contributions to Indian filmmaking.” This tribute promises to cement his enduring impact on the world stage, making IFFM 2025 a must-attend for cinema lovers.
