In a vibrant celebration of Kerala’s rich heritage, a centuries-old royal tradition continues to thrive during the Onam festival, bridging the state’s regal past with its democratic present. On Thursday, September 4, 2025, in Kottayam, State Minister V N Vasavan upheld this cherished custom by presenting the "Uthradakkizhi"—a ceremonial pouch containing Rs 1,001—to N K Soumyavathi Thampuratti, wife of Rajaraja Varma of the Vayaskara Raj Bhavan palace, on the eve of Onam, known as Uthradam.
This symbolic gesture, once performed by the kings of Cochin to honor women of the royal household during the harvest festival, remains a poignant link to Kerala’s monarchical era. Long after the dissolution of the monarchy, the state government has preserved this tradition, funding the ceremonial gift through the district administration. N K Soumyavathi Thampuratti, a direct descendant of the Cochin royal line, received the kizhi in a ceremony attended by prominent figures, including MLA Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, District Collector Chetan Kumar Meena, and local revenue officials.
The Uthradakkizhi presentation, steeped in history, underscores the cultural significance of Onam, Kerala’s grandest festival, celebrated on Friday, September 5, 2025. The festival, rooted in the legend of King Mahabali, is a time of unity, prosperity, and gratitude, marked by vibrant pookkalam (floral designs), traditional feasts, and cultural performances. By continuing this royal ritual, Kerala not only honors its historical legacy but also reinforces the festival’s role as a unifying force that transcends time and societal changes.

This poignant ceremony captivates both locals and visitors, showcasing the state’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage while celebrating the spirit of Onam.
