After an extraordinary 80-day campus lockdown that has paralysed one of Assam’s premier central universities, the Ministry of Education has finally yielded to relentless pressure, confirming in a handwritten communication that Vice-Chancellor Professor Shambhu Nath Singh will be immediately divested of all administrative powers and subjected to a time-bound high-level inquiry over grave allegations ranging from financial irregularities to fabricated academic credentials.
The dramatic concession, conveyed informally to the protesting students and staff, marks the first tangible victory for the united front that has maintained total non-cooperation since September, shutting down classes, examinations, and administrative functions while demanding Singh’s outright removal and a transparent investigation into his controversial tenure.
Yet the battle-hardened protesters have rejected the informal letter as inadequate, vowing to intensify their agitation until the Ministry issues an official gazette notification, publicly announces the inquiry committee’s composition and timeline, and ensures that Singh is permanently barred from campus until cleared of all charges.

The scandal reached boiling point when a recent RTI response from the university itself admitted that crucial documents related to the Vice-Chancellor’s original appointment, PhD certification, and prior service records are mysteriously “not available in the office,” a disclosure that has triggered nationwide outrage and accusations of deliberate concealment at the highest levels.
With Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Dhruba K Bhattacharya instructed to maintain status quo and the entire academic calendar in tatters, Tezpur University remains a symbol of defiance as students, faculty, and non-teaching staff declare they will not resume normalcy until justice is not just promised, but visibly delivered.
