Central Railway has upgraded 10 Mumbai suburban local train services from 12-car to 15-car rakes with effect from Monday, aiming to increase passenger capacity and reduce overcrowding on the city's busy suburban rail network. According to an official announcement, the move is expected to enhance carrying capacity by approximately 25 percent on some of the most heavily used Main Line services. The upgraded operations include five Down services towards Kalyan, Karjat and Kasara, and five Up services heading towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) Mumbai.

The five Down services that have been converted to 15-car operations include trains for Ambernath departing at 9:15 am and 11:08 pm, Kalyan departing at 12:27 pm after being rescheduled from 12:26 pm, Badlapur at 3:03 pm and Karjat at 6:21 pm. These services are expected to accommodate significantly more passengers during both peak and off-peak travel hours.

The upgraded Up services include trains from Ambernath departing at 7:51 am and 11:03 am, with the latter also being converted from a slow service to a fast service. Other upgraded trains include services from Kalyan at 1:36 pm, Badlapur at 4:47 pm and Karjat at 8:38 pm. The conversion is intended to improve commuter convenience by increasing seating and standing capacity without introducing additional train services.

According to Central Railway, each 15-car rake provides three extra coaches compared to a standard 12-car suburban train, allowing substantially more passengers to travel on every trip. The initiative is aimed at easing congestion on the Mumbai suburban network, one of the busiest commuter rail systems in the world, where overcrowding remains a major challenge during peak hours.

The introduction of the additional 15-car services has been made possible through extensive infrastructure upgrades, including platform extensions and yard remodelling works carried out at several stations across the Mumbai division. These improvements form part of Central Railway's long-term strategy to expand the operation of longer suburban trains and improve the efficiency of the city's rail network.

With the latest expansion, the total number of 15-car suburban services operated by Central Railway has increased from 22 to 32. Railway officials said the move is expected to enhance the overall travel experience for lakhs of daily commuters by offering greater carrying capacity and helping reduce crowding on key suburban routes across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
