The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a significant technological reform in its examination system by introducing on-screen marking (OSM) for Class 12 board examinations starting from 2026. The decision marks one of the board’s biggest steps toward digital transformation in assessment and evaluation.
According to an official communication circulated to all CBSE-affiliated schools, Class 12 answer books will be assessed digitally, while Class 10 answer sheets will continue to be evaluated through the traditional physical mode. The board clarified that the dual system will allow a phased and smooth transition to digital assessment.
The move to on-screen marking is aimed at speeding up the evaluation process by eliminating manual totalling errors and reducing human intervention. CBSE officials believe that digital evaluation will ensure greater accuracy, uniformity, and transparency, while also significantly cutting down result processing time.

An added advantage of the new system is increased flexibility for teachers. Evaluators will be able to assess answer sheets from their own schools, enabling them to continue regular teaching duties without disruption. The board also expects the initiative to reduce logistical challenges, transportation costs, and paper usage, making the process more eco-friendly.
To facilitate the transition, CBSE has instructed schools to ensure adequate infrastructure, including reliable high-speed internet, uninterrupted power supply, and updated computer systems. The board plans to conduct training sessions, mock drills, and dry runs to familiarise teachers with the new system before full-scale implementation.
Meanwhile, CBSE confirmed that Class 10 board examinations will be held from February 17 to April 10, while Class 12 exams are scheduled between May 15 and June 1. The board reiterated its commitment to leveraging technology to improve efficiency and credibility in the examination process.
