Friends and neighbors of 26-year-old Bethany MaGee, the victim of a horrific arson attack on a Chicago Transit Authority train last week, have begun sharing portraits of a gentle, intelligent young woman whose life has been upended by the random act of violence. Described to the New York Post as “very soft-spoken, very gentle,” and “incredibly smart,” Magee grew up in the small Indiana town of Upland, where she was a standout honors student and part of a deeply loving Christian family. Residents of the close-knit community of fewer than 4,000 people, home to Taylor University, expressed shock and heartbreak, with one neighbor saying the family is “going through a hard time, so we are praying for them.”
Surveillance footage from the Red Line train shows MaGee sitting alone when 38-year-old Lawrence Reed allegedly approached from behind, doused her with a flammable liquid, and set her alight. MaGee attempted to flee but collapsed on the platform after exiting at the next stop. She remains hospitalized in critical condition with severe burns to her face and upper body. The attack, which occurred in broad daylight, has stunned commuters and reignited concerns about safety on Chicago’s public transit system.
Reed, identified by authorities through video evidence and witness accounts, was arrested hours later. Court records reveal an extensive criminal history spanning three decades, including 53 cases in Cook County since 1993 and nine felony convictions. Most recently, he had been released on bond by Cook County Judge Teresa Molina-Gonzalez despite a pending aggravated battery charge for allegedly knocking a hospital social worker unconscious in August. Federal prosecutors have now charged Reed with terrorism in connection with the train attack, citing its intent to terrorize the public.

Community members in Upland have rallied around MaGee’s family, respecting their request for privacy while organizing prayer vigils. “They’re a wonderful family… about as loving as you can be,” one neighbor told reporters, emphasizing the family’s strong faith as they face an agonizing wait for their daughter’s recovery. Fundraising efforts have begun to help cover medical expenses, with friends describing MaGee as someone who “always saw the good in people” and now needs that same kindness returned tenfold.
