Security forces in Manipur successfully recovered and neutralised 27 country-made improvised explosive devices in Imphal East district on January 1, 2026, preventing a potentially catastrophic incident in a state that continues to face security challenges despite reduced large-scale violence.
The bombs were discovered during a targeted counter-insurgency operation near Monglham village under Thoubal Dam Police Station, where they were subsequently defused at a secure location away from populated areas, demonstrating the vigilance of joint teams comprising the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, and Manipur Police.
In a connected operation the previous day, security personnel seized three firearms and accompanying ammunition from the Langdum Nungjengbi area within the same district, underscoring the persistent efforts to dismantle illegal arms networks and insurgent activities that exacerbate tensions.

These actions are integral to the broader search and area domination operations conducted by security forces throughout Manipur since the outbreak of ethnic violence in May 2023 between the majority Meitei community in the Imphal Valley and the Kuki-Zo tribal groups in the surrounding hills, a conflict that has resulted in over 260 deaths, widespread destruction, and the displacement of more than 60,000 people, many of whom remain in relief camps.
The state has been under President's Rule since February 13, 2025, following the resignation of former Chief Minister N Biren Singh amid criticism over the handling of the crisis, with the assembly placed in suspended animation and central administration overseeing efforts to restore peace, including resettlement initiatives and extensions of inquiry commissions, as sporadic incidents and underlying divisions persist into 2026.
