Thousands of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers staged a massive protest near the Congress Headquarters in New Delhi on August 30, 2025, demanding an apology from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for alleged abusive remarks targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother during a rally in Bihar. The demonstration, marked by slogans and posters, turned chaotic as Delhi Police deployed water cannons to disperse protesters attempting to breach barricades on Kotla Road near ITO.
The protest, attended by over 10,000 BJP supporters, including national general secretary Tarun Chugh, Delhi BJP co-incharge Alka Gurjar, MPs, and MLAs, saw injuries and detentions. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva reported that Shahdara district president Deepak Gaba was seriously injured and hospitalized, while South Delhi district president Maya Bisht fractured a finger, and Mahila Morcha secretary Nivedita Tiwari sustained a hand injury. Detained protesters were later released.
Sachdeva accused Congress members of hurling insults at Modi and his late mother during the Voter Adhikar Yatra in Darbhanga, Bihar, on August 27, 2025, where Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Vadra, and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav were campaigning. “Insulting the Prime Minister’s late mother is an insult to all mothers in India. Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi must apologize,” Sachdeva declared, calling the remarks “unpardonable.”

The controversy stems from a viral video showing a person using derogatory language against Modi from a stage adorned with Congress and RJD posters. Local Congress leader Mohd Naushad, implicated by Bihar Police, clarified that the remarks were made by unknown individuals after he and Rahul Gandhi had left for Muzaffarpur. The Darbhanga Police arrested 20-year-old Mohammad Rizvi, alias Raja, on August 29, 2025, for the remarks.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, speaking in Hyderabad during Ganesh Chaturthi festivities, urged Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge to compel Rahul Gandhi to apologize, calling the insults “highly condemnable.” The BJP has intensified its attack, with leaders like Union Home Minister Amit Shah accusing Congress of fostering a “culture of hatred.” Shah demanded an apology, stating, “The nation watches Congress in disgust.”
Congress distanced itself from the incident, with leader Rashid Alvi condemning the language and Naushad issuing an apology for the event he organized, despite his absence during the remarks. The clash has sparked a broader political firestorm, with BJP leaders warning that such language insults Indian values and predicting a strong public backlash in poll-bound Bihar.
