The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has delivered a sweeping victory in Gujarat’s local body elections, strengthening its political dominance across urban and rural regions and sending a strong early signal ahead of the 2027 state Assembly elections. The results, declared after counting concluded on April 28, covered a wide range of civic and panchayat bodies across the state.
The elections included contests for 15 Municipal Corporations, 84 Municipalities, 34 District Panchayats, and 260 Taluka Panchayats, making it one of the largest local democratic exercises in Gujarat. Out of a total 10,050 seats, 732 were already won uncontested, while the remaining seats were decided through counting. The outcome reflected a decisive mandate in favour of the ruling party.
In urban centres, the BJP achieved a complete sweep by winning all 15 Municipal Corporations. The party also crossed the crucial majority mark in every corporation, reinforcing its stronghold in Gujarat’s cities. The most notable result came from Surat, once seen as a rising base for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), where the BJP significantly improved its performance, securing 115 seats. In contrast, AAP was reduced to just four seats, while the Congress managed only one. The BJP’s dominance extended beyond cities into smaller municipalities, where it won control of 76 civic bodies, compared to just eight secured by the Congress. This trend highlighted the party’s continued influence even in regions where anti-incumbency sentiment is typically stronger.

Rural results further strengthened the BJP’s position. In the 34 District Panchayats, which together comprise 1,090 seats, the party secured 568 seats, while the Congress won only 77. In Taluka Panchayats, the BJP captured 2,397 out of 5,234 seats and gained control of 253 out of 260 bodies, reflecting deep organisational reach at the village level. While the BJP’s performance dominated the results, AAP registered a small symbolic win in Bagasara Taluka Panchayat in Amreli district, marking its first control of a local body in the region. However, the party’s overall presence remained limited.
For the Congress, the results signalled a continued decline in its influence across Gujarat. Once a strong challenger in both urban and rural regions, the party now faces significant challenges in rebuilding its organisational strength and reconnecting with voters at the grassroots level. The outcome underscores a consolidated political landscape in favour of the BJP as the state moves toward the next major electoral cycle.
