Bihar Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari has announced that the word “Fail” will no longer appear on the marksheets of students who do not clear Class 10 and Class 12 examinations in the state. Instead, such students will be described as “Eligible for Skills” on their certificates, as part of an effort to protect students' morale and recognise their potential beyond examination results.
Tiwari made the announcement on Thursday night during a review meeting at the Madan Mohan Auditorium in Vikas Bhawan. He said that not securing the expected marks in an examination should not be viewed as an indication that a child lacks potential. The Education Department will amend the existing rules and issue directions to the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) to implement the change.
The minister also announced that special one-month classes would be organised for students appearing for the Matric compartment examinations. The initiative is intended to give students additional academic support and preparation before they take the examinations again. The move comes as the state looks to provide students with opportunities to improve their academic outcomes rather than defining their prospects solely through examination results.

The review meeting also covered preparations for the Teachers' Day programme scheduled at Shri Krishna Memorial Hall on September 5. Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary is expected to inaugurate the event, with both Deputy Chief Ministers attending. The Chief Minister will also launch the “Teacher Support Portal”, while one teacher from each district will be selected for the State Award in recognition of their contribution.
Students from 10 model schools in Patna, selected as Saraswati Vidya Niketan, will be invited to the Teachers' Day programme. Teachers from District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs), the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), and other teacher-training centres will also participate in the event.
During the meeting, Tiwari reviewed the income and expenditure of various education-related departments, including the Bihar Education Project Council. He instructed officials to focus on the effective implementation of government schemes and ensure that available resources are used appropriately. The proposed change in marksheet terminology is part of the broader emphasis on supporting students and providing alternative opportunities for those who do not achieve the required examination scores.
