Tensions escalated in the Mira Road area of Mumbai ahead of Bakrid after a dispute over the alleged keeping of goats within a residential housing society triggered protests, police intervention, and reports of scuffles between groups of residents. The incident took place at Srishti Complex in Poonam Cluster-1, where members of certain residents’ groups objected to the alleged construction of a temporary shed inside the housing premises intended to house goats for sacrificial purposes ahead of Eid al-Adha. According to multiple reports, the objections led to protests during the day, after which the temporary structure was reportedly removed.
However, the situation intensified later in the day when members of the Muslim community allegedly gathered in protest, prompting the filing of a complaint at the Kashimira police station. The escalating tensions required police deployment in the area to prevent further deterioration of law and order. Despite police efforts to calm the situation, reports suggest that the dispute resurfaced late at night, leading to a brief scuffle at the site. Authorities continued to monitor the area as they attempted to defuse tensions between both sides and restore normalcy within the residential complex.
The initial objections were linked to concerns over compliance with Bombay High Court directives that restrict animal sacrifice in residential areas without prior permission. Residents cited these guidelines while opposing the temporary arrangement inside the housing society premises. Social activist and journalist Siraj Noorani, in a post on X, stated that the controversy stemmed from the installation of a temporary shed allegedly meant for keeping sacrificial goats within the society. The claim further fuelled debates on social media, adding to the already heightened tensions on the ground.

Police officials have not confirmed any major injuries but said the situation was brought under control following intervention. Further inquiry is underway to determine whether any rules or municipal guidelines were violated and to ensure that preventive measures are in place ahead of the festival period. The incident highlights recurring sensitivities in densely populated urban housing societies during major religious festivals, where questions of space usage, community practices, and regulatory compliance often intersect, occasionally leading to localised disputes.
