Wipro Founder and Chairman Azim Premji responded to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s appeal to allow public vehicular access through Wipro’s Sarjapur campus to alleviate Bengaluru’s chronic traffic congestion, particularly along the Outer Ring Road (ORR). Premji declined the request, citing legal, governance, and statutory constraints, as the campus operates as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) with strict access control norms mandated by global service commitments. However, he reaffirmed Wipro’s commitment to addressing the city’s mobility challenges, proposing a comprehensive, expert-led solution.
In a detailed letter to the Chief Minister, Premji emphasized that allowing public traffic through the Sarjapur campus, a private property of a listed company, would face significant regulatory hurdles and fail to provide a sustainable solution. “Our contractual conditions mandate stringent, non-negotiable access control norms for governance and compliance,” he wrote, noting that such a measure would not address the root causes of Bengaluru’s traffic woes.
Instead, Premji advocated for a scientific, data-driven approach, proposing a comprehensive study by a globally recognized urban transport management entity to develop short-, medium-, and long-term solutions for the ORR, a critical export-oriented corridor.
To demonstrate Wipro’s commitment, Premji offered to underwrite a significant portion of the study’s costs and designated senior representative Reshmi Shankar to coordinate with state officials. This move highlights the growing role of private stakeholders in shaping urban infrastructure policy in tech-driven cities like Bengaluru, which continues to grapple with severe traffic congestion. Premji’s response underscores the complexity of the issue, rejecting quick fixes in favor of a holistic roadmap to ensure sustainable mobility solutions for the city’s future.
