Axis Bank has inaugurated its first digital locker-focused branch in the national capital, marking a strategic step in redesigning physical banking services with a stronger emphasis on automation, security, and customer convenience. The branch was officially launched on Saturday in the presence of Financial Services Secretary M Nagaraju, Axis Bank Managing Director Amitabh Chaudhry, and Executive Director Munish Sharda.
The new branch is part of Axis Bank’s effort to reimagine traditional branch banking by integrating advanced technology with specialised locker services. The bank said the facility is designed to offer customers enhanced control, privacy, and accessibility, particularly in urban areas where demand for secure storage solutions is rising. The model focuses on combining compact branch design with high-security infrastructure to improve service efficiency.
According to the bank, India is currently experiencing a widening gap in the availability of safe deposit lockers, especially in densely populated cities. Industry estimates suggest that by 2030, nearly 6 crore affluent individuals may require locker facilities, while the current nationwide supply is estimated at around 60 lakh lockers. This shortfall is more pronounced in metropolitan areas where residential patterns are increasingly centred around high-density and gated communities.

Axis Bank’s digital locker branch aims to address this demand by introducing a technology-driven format that integrates secure locker access within premium urban ecosystems. The branch design prioritises space efficiency while ensuring that customers can access locker services in a streamlined and controlled environment. The bank said this approach is intended to bring banking services closer to residential clusters where demand is concentrated.
The facility also incorporates advanced security systems, including centrally monitored vaults, multi-layer surveillance, and sensor-based protection mechanisms. These features are supported by controlled and 24x7 access protocols, aimed at ensuring high levels of safety for customers using locker services. The bank highlighted that such infrastructure upgrades are essential to meet evolving security expectations in modern banking.
By introducing this specialised branch format, Axis Bank said it is strengthening its physical presence in high-density urban locations while enhancing customer experience through differentiated service delivery. The initiative reflects a broader trend in the banking sector toward blending digital efficiency with secure physical infrastructure to meet changing urban financial service needs.
