The flood situation in Assam worsened further on Tuesday as 21 more people died in rain-related incidents, pushing the death toll from this year’s floods to 31, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). The flooding has affected more than 5.64 lakh people across 16 districts, with authorities intensifying rescue and relief operations in several affected areas. According to a late-night bulletin issued by ASDMA, Sivasagar district recorded the highest number of fatalities in the past 24 hours, with 13 deaths reported.

Charaideo recorded five deaths, while Golaghat reported two fatalities and Jorhat reported one. The latest casualties have significantly increased the overall impact of the ongoing flood situation across the state. The ASDMA said the number of affected people has risen sharply, with more than 5,64,600 residents impacted across districts including Golaghat, Kamrup, Hojai, Dibrugarh, Biswanath, Dhemaji, Sonitpur, Udalguri, Nagaon, Charaideo, Kamrup (Metro), Jorhat, Tinsukia, Karbi Anglong, Lakhimpur and Sivasagar.

The affected population increased from over 3.63 lakh people across 15 districts reported on Monday, highlighting the rapid expansion of the flood crisis. Several areas have witnessed waterlogging, disruption of normal life and challenges in accessing essential services due to rising water levels. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said he would visit the worst-affected districts from Wednesday to review relief and rescue operations. In a social media post, Sarma said the floods were caused by a cloudburst upstream and had created significant difficulties for residents.

"Tomorrow I will be visiting flood-affected areas and relief camps in Charaideo, Nazira, Sivasagar, Sonari, Jorhat and Teok to review the relief operations," the Chief Minister said. He added that the government was monitoring the situation and supporting affected communities. District administrations and disaster response teams have been engaged in rescue efforts, including assisting stranded residents and managing relief camps. Authorities have been focusing on providing shelter, food, medical support and other essential supplies to people displaced by the floods.

The latest flooding comes as Assam continues to face recurring monsoon-related challenges due to heavy rainfall, river overflow and extreme weather events. Several rivers across the state frequently breach danger levels during intense rainfall periods, affecting large populations in vulnerable regions. With more rainfall expected in some areas, officials have advised residents to remain cautious and follow instructions issued by local authorities.

The state government and disaster management agencies are continuing to assess the situation as rescue operations and relief measures remain underway. The worsening flood conditions have placed additional pressure on local administrations, with thousands of families requiring immediate assistance. Authorities are expected to provide further updates as efforts continue to control the impact of the disaster and support affected communities across Assam.
