Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has raised serious concerns over what he describes as an "invasion" by members of one religious community, accusing them of strategically migrating to reshape the state's demographic and political landscape. Speaking at a press conference, Sarma alleged that these migrants, primarily Bengali-speaking Muslims, are encroaching on land to establish dominance in Assamese-majority regions.
Since 2021, Sarma’s administration has reclaimed over 1.19 lakh bighas (160 sq km) of land through extensive eviction drives, targeting what he claims are illegal settlements. He stated that many of these settlers already own land in their home districts but relocate to other areas, enrolling as voters to create influential vote banks. “This is not just about land; it’s a deliberate attempt to alter Assam’s identity,” Sarma asserted, without directly naming the community.
The Chief Minister accused the Congress party of enabling these settlers for political gain, noting sudden spikes in Congress votes in areas with significant demographic shifts. He emphasized that such migration patterns threaten the indigenous Assamese population, particularly in lower, middle, and now upper Assam.

Sarma dismissed suggestions that revising the electoral roll or the yet-to-be-notified National Register of Citizens (NRC) could address the issue, citing flaws in the NRC process that may have included foreigners. Instead, he advocated for stringent eviction policies and proactive leadership to curb this "demographic invasion."
Since May 2021, the government has cleared 84,743 bighas of forest land and 26,713 bighas of government-owned ‘khas’ land, among others, from encroachments. Sarma vowed to continue these efforts to protect Assam’s land and cultural heritage, urging district authorities to remove evicted settlers from local voter lists, as their names often remain registered in their native districts.
