Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma conducted a virtual meeting on Friday to finalize arrangements for the 13th-day Vedic rituals of renowned singer-composer Zubeen Garg, to be held in Jorhat, the town where he spent his formative years. The beloved artist, aged 52, tragically drowned in Singapore on September 19, 2025.
Following Garg’s cremation with full state honors in Kamarkuchi, near Guwahati, on Monday, the state government has responded to public sentiment in Jorhat, where residents had hoped to host the final rites. Due to the ill health of Garg’s octogenarian father, the family chose Guwahati for the cremation but agreed to hold the 13th-day rituals in Jorhat, alongside plans for a memorial to celebrate the singer’s legacy.
Sarma, in a post on X, shared that he met virtually with Jorhat’s District Commissioner, Jorhat MLA Hiten Goswami, Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi, and other stakeholders to ensure the rituals and the proposed memorial reflect Garg’s life and contributions. The Chief Minister’s Office confirmed that the state will organize the rituals, including the transportation of Garg’s chitabhasma (ashes) to Jorhat.
