In a significant step towards ensuring a stable and affordable power supply, the Assam Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has granted post-facto approval for procuring 500 MW of power from the Union coal ministry. The decision, finalized during a cabinet meeting on Wednesday evening, sets the procurement rate at Rs 5.79 per unit, aiming to deliver cost-effective electricity to Assam’s residents. This move is expected to alleviate power shortages and support the state’s growing energy demands.
Additionally, the cabinet greenlit a 1,500 MW pumped storage project in Karbi Anglong, marking a major push towards sustainable and clean energy. This ambitious project aligns with Assam’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint while meeting the region’s energy needs through renewable sources.
To bolster healthcare access, the cabinet sanctioned the remaining Rs 325 crore for the ‘Mukhya Mantri Ayushman Asom Yojana’ for 2025-26. This funding ensures the continuation of cashless medical treatment, making quality healthcare accessible to all eligible beneficiaries across the state.

In a bid to spur industrial growth and promote sustainable urban development, the cabinet approved amendments to the Assam Unified Building Construction (Regulation) Byelaws, 2022. These changes will streamline industrial development, encourage green building initiatives, and enhance the ease of doing business. The amendments also support the ‘transit-oriented development’ (TOD) policy, enabling smaller plots to benefit from urban planning strategies and facilitating affordable housing for economically weaker sections.
Further, the cabinet approved the reclassification of eight proposals under the third edition of the Mission Basundhara scheme in Dhubri and Biswanath districts. These proposals focus on regulating land reclassification and transfer for non-agricultural purposes, promoting efficient land use and development.
Chief Minister Sarma emphasized that these decisions reflect the state’s commitment to progress, sustainability, and inclusive growth, positioning Assam as a leader in energy, healthcare, and urban development.
