Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu took a significant step toward inclusive education by distributing AI-based ‘KIBO’ reading devices to students at the Donyi Polo Mission School for the Hearing and Visually Impaired in Chimpu. These innovative devices enable students to independently access printed, handwritten, and digital content in their preferred language and at their own pace, fostering empowerment and self-reliance.
“Real progress happens when innovation meets compassion, and when no one is left behind,” Khandu said during the distribution event, emphasizing the transformative potential of technology in education. The KIBO devices, designed to support visually and hearing-impaired students, align with the state’s broader vision of ensuring quality education for all, as outlined in initiatives like *Mission Shikshit Arunachal* by 2029.
Founded in 1990 by former Chief Minister Gegong Apang, the Donyi Polo Mission School has been a pioneer in inclusive education. Recognizing its contributions, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein recently announced an increase in the school’s annual grant-in-aid from ₹1.4 crore to ₹2 crore, alongside a ₹5-crore corpus fund to ensure long-term sustainability, as declared during a ‘Let’s Speak Arunachal’ workshop on August 1, 2025.

Khandu’s focus on inclusive education complements his broader educational reforms. On July 28, 2025, he unveiled ₹500 crore worth of initiatives, including 50 Golden Jubilee Model Schools, to mark Arunachal’s 50th statehood anniversary. These efforts aim to enhance infrastructure, digital learning, and teacher training. Additionally, the state’s *Digi-kaksha* initiative, launched in 2023, introduced smart classrooms with 4K HD interactive boards to bridge the digital divide, particularly for specially abled students.
The Chief Minister’s commitment extends beyond education. His administration has prioritized youth empowerment, with programs like the *Year of Youth* in 2024-25, collaborating with institutions like IIM Calcutta and the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship to foster skill development and job creation. Khandu’s support for indigenous culture, including the Donyi Polo faith, also reflects his holistic approach to development, as seen in his recent posts on X advocating for preserving Arunachal’s rooted traditions.
By integrating technology like KIBO with sustained financial support, Khandu is ensuring that differently abled students are not just included but empowered to thrive in a future-ready education system. This initiative underscores Arunachal’s strides toward inclusivity, aligning with the National Education Policy’s 2030 goals.
