The Ministry of Defence has formally launched the procurement process for one lakh (100,000) advanced 9mm pistols exclusively designed and manufactured in India, aligning with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision to reduce dependency on foreign arms. Issued through a detailed request for information (RFI), the initiative targets modern handguns equipped with essential accessories such as night sights, laser targeting systems, suppressors, and Picatinny rails for mounting optics and lights.
These new pistols are engineered to outperform older models by incorporating ambidextrous controls for left- and right-handed users, lighter polymer frames for enhanced portability, and a modular architecture that allows seamless future upgrades without major redesigns. They must demonstrate unwavering reliability in extreme conditions, including high-altitude deployments up to 18,000 feet, temperatures ranging from -30°C to 55°C, dust, rain, and mud, making them ideal for diverse operational theatres across India.
Currently, elite special forces units depend on imported pistols, but this procurement emphasises indigenous development with potential technology transfer to domestic manufacturers. Collaborations may involve DRDO innovations, including 3D-printed components for rapid prototyping and pistols optimised for high cyclic rates in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism scenarios, ensuring troops receive cutting-edge weaponry tailored to national requirements.

This acquisition complements ongoing modernisation efforts, building on the recent induction of thousands of light machine guns (LMGs) from Israel Weapon Industries and the impending delivery of over 1.7 lakh close-quarter battle (CQB) carbines through partnerships involving Indian firms like Bharat Forge and PLR Systems. Together, these upgrades are delivering a comprehensive enhancement to infantry close-combat capabilities.
By prioritising licensed local production and integrating advanced features, the Indian Army aims to equip soldiers with versatile, durable personal defence weapons that bolster operational effectiveness in urban warfare, border skirmishes, and internal security duties, marking another milestone in India's drive towards self-sufficiency in defence manufacturing.
