Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi and his wife, Sunita Dwivedi, pledged to donate their organs at a ceremony held at Army Hospital (Research & Referral) in New Delhi on August 22, 2025. General Dwivedi described organ donation as a "service to humanity," reflecting the armed forces’ ethos of sacrifice and courage, and urged military personnel and their families to join the cause, setting a societal example.
The pledge has significantly bolstered the Armed Forces Organ Retrieval and Transplantation Authority (AORTA), a key initiative under Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services. AORTA has emerged as a national leader in organ retrieval and transplantation, with over 26,000 military personnel pledging donations in a single campaign, a record highlighted by officials.
During the event, General Dwivedi praised AORTA’s efforts in raising awareness within the armed forces community. He also recognized the critical role of healthcare workers by awarding on-the-spot Chiefs’ Recommendation Cards to three staff members, including a housekeeper, for their dedication to organ transplant care and patient hygiene.

The event has sparked widespread admiration, with social media posts on X praising the Army Chief’s leadership. As AORTA continues to promote organ donation, General Dwivedi’s pledge is expected to inspire thousands more to join the movement, reinforcing the armed forces’ commitment to serving the nation beyond the battlefield.
