India’s Armed Forces are exploring alternative energy solutions, including biogas and renewable sources, to reduce dependence on conventional fuel amid a global energy crunch linked to tensions in West Asia. Officials indicated that the initiative aims to conserve Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and other fuels, with immediate plans focusing on introducing biogas-based cooking systems, while longer-term strategies involve scaling up the use of solar and wind energy across military installations.

According to sources, the Indian Army is preparing to initiate procurement orders for biogas stoves, marking a shift toward more sustainable and locally sourced energy solutions. This move is expected to reduce reliance on traditional fuel supplies, particularly in remote or high-dependency areas where logistics and transportation costs are significant. The effort aligns with broader government goals of enhancing energy efficiency and resilience within critical sectors.

In addition to exploring alternative fuels, discussions are underway to optimise fuel consumption in operational logistics. One proposal under consideration involves restricting the movement of large army convoys for administrative purposes to distances of up to 400 kilometres, beyond which the rail network would be used more extensively. This approach is expected to significantly cut fuel usage while improving efficiency in long-distance troop and material transport.
