In a troubling sign of growing violence against religious minorities in Bangladesh, a Hindu man, Joy Mahapatro, was killed on Thursday in the Sunamganj district. According to his family, Mahapatro was beaten and poisoned by a local resident before being admitted to the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where he later died in the ICU.
This incident follows closely on the heels of another tragic case in which 25-year-old Hindu man Mithun Sarkar died after jumping into a canal to escape a mob accusing him of theft. Sarkar’s body was recovered by police on Tuesday, highlighting the increasing frequency of mob-related attacks targeting minority communities.
Observers note that the violence comes amid political instability, as Bangladesh prepares for its first parliamentary elections since the 2024 uprising that toppled former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Human rights advocates warn that these attacks are indicative of a systemic failure to protect vulnerable citizens rather than isolated incidents.

The violence against Hindus has also included the recent lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, a 27-year-old garment worker from Mymensingh. Das was allegedly forced to resign by his factory supervisors before being handed over to an enraged mob. He was beaten to death, hanged from a tree, and his body set on fire, in an incident widely condemned internationally.
Bangladesh police have since arrested the prime suspect in Das’ killing, Yasin Arafat, a former teacher accused of orchestrating and participating in the attack. Investigators revealed that several of Das’ colleagues were also involved in the assault, underscoring the organized nature of such acts against minorities.
Human rights organizations continue to call on Bangladeshi authorities to ensure the safety of religious minorities and prevent further attacks. The recent surge in killings and assaults has intensified fears within the Hindu community, raising concerns about the country’s ability to uphold law and order for all citizens.
