An 11-year-old boy was allegedly chained to a wooden log at a madrasa as punishment for irregular attendance, triggering outrage and prompting a police investigation in Andhra Pradesh, officials said on Wednesday. The incident came to light after disturbing videos of the child dragging the wooden stump surfaced on social media and quickly went viral.
According to preliminary findings, the child was subjected to the punishment for frequently missing classes and being irregular in attendance. Authorities said the act was carried out within the madrasa premises, allegedly after a request from the boy’s mother, raising serious concerns about disciplinary practices and child welfare oversight.
Locals reportedly noticed the boy walking along a road while dragging the heavy wooden log tied to his leg. Alarmed by the sight, they intervened immediately, rescued the child, and informed the police. The rescue operation led to swift action by local authorities, who began questioning those involved in the incident.

Police officials confirmed that a preliminary inquiry has established that the child was subjected to inhumane treatment. Sub-Inspector Duggi Reddy described the act as “clearly inhuman” and said that a formal case has been registered. A detailed investigation is now underway to determine responsibility and examine whether more individuals were involved.
Authorities have also stated that the child will be produced before the Child Welfare Committee for further care and protection. Officials are assessing the environment in which the punishment took place, including the role of the madrasa administration and any lapses in safeguarding the child’s rights.
The incident has sparked widespread concern over child safety and disciplinary practices in educational and religious institutions. Officials have assured strict action against those found responsible, while child rights advocates have called for stronger monitoring mechanisms to prevent such incidents in the future.
