On Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid solemn tribute to the millions who suffered during the 1947 Partition of India, while sharply criticizing the Congress party for its role in dividing the nation. In a poignant post on X, Shah described the Partition as a "tragic chapter" that inflicted deep wounds on "Maa Bharti" (Mother India), leading to widespread violence, exploitation, and the displacement of millions.
"Today, we remember the pain of those who endured the tragedy of Partition. The Congress party’s decisions tore the nation apart, hurting its pride and causing unimaginable suffering," Shah wrote, emphasizing that the nation will never forget the atrocities and losses of that era. He offered heartfelt condolences to the victims, honoring those who lost their lives and livelihoods in what he called a "dark chapter of history."
The Partition, which split British India into India and Pakistan, triggered one of the largest mass migrations in history, with 14–18 million people crossing borders amid communal violence that claimed over a million lives. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who designated August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day in 2021, also reflected on the occasion, praising the resilience of survivors who rebuilt their lives despite immense loss. "This day reminds us to strengthen the bonds of harmony that hold our country together," Modi posted on X.

Other leaders, including Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, echoed the call for unity. Adityanath labeled the Partition a "tragedy born of religious fanaticism," urging that its lessons guide future generations. Jaishankar highlighted the "far-reaching human and strategic consequences" of the division, emphasizing the need to learn from its pain.
The BJP intensified the narrative, with its official X handle sharing a video attributing the Partition to "Congress’s deceit, Nehru’s greed, and the Muslim League’s divisive tactics." The observance, marked by exhibitions and tributes nationwide, underscores the Modi government’s commitment to ensuring the sacrifices and struggles of 1947 are remembered as India prepares to celebrate its 79th Independence Day tomorrow.
