Air India is grappling with a safety crisis as the Ministry of Civil Aviation disclosed that the airline has been issued nine showcause notices for five safety violations over the past six months. Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, informed the Rajya Sabha that enforcement action has been finalized for one violation, with others still under scrutiny. The revelation comes in the wake of the June 12, 2025, crash of Air India flight AI-171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, near Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
Mohol noted that no adverse trends were identified in Air India’s reliability reports for the crashed aircraft. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is conducting a detailed probe under the Aircraft (Investigation of Accidents & Incidents) Rules, 2017, to uncover the causes of the accident. A preliminary report, released on July 12, 2025, is available on the AAIB website, with the investigation ongoing to pinpoint contributing factors.
