A Mumbai-bound Air India flight, AI887, returned safely to Delhi Airport shortly after take-off on Monday due to a technical issue, airline officials confirmed. The Boeing 777-300ER aircraft had been airborne for about an hour before the crew decided to return as a precaution, following standard operating procedures.
Air India stated that all passengers and crew disembarked safely, and the airline regretted the inconvenience caused by the unforeseen situation. “The safety and well-being of our passengers and crew remain our top priority,” a spokesperson said, adding that the aircraft is now undergoing thorough technical checks.
The airline has arranged alternative flights to ensure that affected passengers reach their destination without significant delay. Ground staff at Delhi Airport assisted travelers immediately, providing necessary support and updates on onward travel arrangements.

Flight tracking data from Flightradar24.com confirmed that the aircraft took off around 6:30 a.m. before returning to the airport. The incident comes amid a period of heightened operational vigilance as airlines prepare for the fog season, which often causes delays and schedule disruptions.
To minimise inconvenience during such conditions, Air India has implemented several measures, including rostering pilots certified for CAT III B operations, deploying CAT III B-certified aircraft, and ensuring network-wide airport readiness. The airline has also activated its ‘Fog Care’ initiative, aimed at assisting passengers during weather-related disruptions.
Officials emphasized that returning a flight after take-off due to a technical glitch is a routine safety precaution. Air India assured passengers that the aircraft and crew followed all safety protocols and that flights will continue as scheduled once the necessary inspections are completed.
