An Air India Airbus A320 (Flight AI2744, VT-TYA) from Kochi overshot the runway at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on Monday morning at approximately 9:30 AM due to heavy rainfall. The aircraft veered into a muddy area but was maneuvered back to the paved surface, taxiing safely to the gate, where all passengers and crew disembarked unharmed, an Air India spokesperson confirmed.
The primary runway (09/27) sustained minor damage, prompting the activation of the secondary runway (14/32) to maintain operations, according to CSMIA officials. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has grounded the aircraft for inspections and is investigating the incident, with heavy rain cited as a contributing factor. This marks the third runway excursion at Mumbai in seven years, raising concerns about monsoon-related safety challenges.
