In a groundbreaking move, the Union Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has greenlit Uttar Pradesh’s pioneering AI and Big Data Analytics-based Road Safety Pilot Project, marking India’s first state-led AI-driven effort to curb road accidents. Launched by the UP Transport Department, this zero-cost initiative, executed by ITI Limited and global tech firm mLogica, promises to transform road safety and enforcement efficiency.
The six-week prototype will harness data from accident records, weather feeds, vehicle telematics, driver profiles, and roadway attributes to develop AI models that identify accident causes, predict black spots, and deliver real-time policy dashboards. With Rs 10 crore allocated in the 2025-26 Budget, UP aims to establish a data-driven administrative model, integrating AI across core functions like faceless licensing, e-challan operations, and ‘Vahan Sarathi’ registries.
The project ensures compliance with the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, with continuous audits for data privacy and cybersecurity. Upon completion, a detailed outcome report will be submitted to the ministry, which incurs no financial liability.

The AI engine will power paperless licensing, real-time fraud detection, vehicle positioning, and predictive policing to flag potential traffic violations, equipping officers with data-driven alerts. A virtual dashboard will track revenue, infractions, and credentials, sharpening policy design.
Transport Commissioner Brajesh Narain Singh declared, “This initiative positions Uttar Pradesh as a national leader in data-driven governance, revolutionizing road safety and departmental operations with cutting-edge technology.” Work begins immediately, setting the stage for UP to redefine India’s transport landscape.
