Senior Abhishek Banerjee on Saturday questioned the credibility of the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections, alleging large-scale irregularities and accusing the Election Commission of India of acting in a “partisan” manner during the electoral process. The remarks came after the BJP emerged victorious in the polls.
In his first public statement following the declaration of results, the Trinamool Congress national general secretary said the party would continue to function as a “strong, vocal and uncompromising opposition” both in West Bengal and at the national level. Posting on social media platform X, Banerjee claimed that democratic institutions expected to operate impartially had appeared compromised during the election process.
The Diamond Harbour MP alleged that nearly 30 lakh genuine voters were “disenfranchised” from electoral rolls during the polls, which he described as one of the most difficult elections fought by the All India Trinamool Congress. He asserted that the party would continue raising concerns over the conduct of the elections and would stand by party workers and supporters seeking accountability.

Banerjee also raised questions regarding the handling of electronic voting machines (EVMs), alleging mismatches involving control units and irregularities in the movement and management of voting equipment. According to him, these incidents had led many citizens to question whether the electoral mandate accurately reflected the will of the people.
The TMC leader demanded the release of CCTV footage from counting centres and called for transparent counting and verification of VVPAT slips. He argued that electoral transparency was essential to maintaining public trust in democratic institutions and said recent developments had severely undermined that confidence. The allegations add to the ongoing political tensions in West Bengal following the election outcome. As of now, the Election Commission has not publicly responded to the specific accusations raised by Banerjee regarding EVM handling, voter rolls, or counting procedures.
